Once limited to the race machines and exotic road supercars, supercharging is now commonplace among mainstream manufacturers. In particular, superchargers have been fitted widely to popular Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes and Mini models. These manufacturers chose the Eaton range for their midrange torque, efficiency and dependability, but like any mechanical contraption Eaton superchargers are subject to wear – so they need maintenance or fixing which in most cases means a supercharger rebuild.

Modes of Failure
In general, there isn’t very much that can go wrong with an Eaton supercharger. In extreme and rare cases they can ingest foreign objects which causes catastrophic failure, but in the vast majority of cases the symptoms will be a gradual increase in noise, clattering, rattling or rumbling, which indicates that a bearing is starting to wear, or that a drive coupler is fractured and failing. If you have a performance issue and the supercharger is quiet – look elsewhere for the problem, as a quiet supercharger is a healthy supercharger.
The important thing is to have your supercharger repaired when you hear early signs of something being wrong – leave it too long and the damage will spread from bearing wear to wear of the rotors and/or main casing, and while some slight scratches to rotors and casings are acceptable, heavy galling will mean the supercharger becomes scrap.

Replacing the bearings and oil seals in your supercharger will give it a new lease of life, and your own peace of mind. As long as issues are identified and repaired early, Eaton supercharger rebuilds costs as little as £315 including vat for the simpler models which require fewest components. You can either have your supercharger removed locally and sent to us (we can arrange collect and return insured courier service), or bring the car to us for drive-in / drive-out Eaton supercharger rebuild service including removal from and refit to the vehicle. Preventative Oil Changes
Preventative oil changes are very important on Eaton superchargers, as the ‘sealed for life’ claim is at best an aspiration, and repairs can be expensive. Although Eaton uses a high quality synthetic aviation turbine oil in its supercharger range, the oil is not indestructible and does oxides gradually over the years of exposure to high working temperatures.

After only 50,000 miles, the original oil can have degraded from the nice clear sample on the left to burnt-smelling brown soup like the right hand sample – not good for protecting the bearings and seals in your Eaton supercharger!
We have a range of rebuild services available for most of the Eaton supercharger types including M45, M62, M90, M112, M122 and TVS versions. Call us and select Option 3 to discuss your supercharger servicing requirements.
